Pakistan air attack kills 30 ‘militants’ in South Waziristan

Dawn is among the many news outlets in Pakistan and abroad reporting a Pakistani air attack in South Waziristan, killing 30 ‘militants’.

The air attack was said to have been launched in the Shawal area, where Pakistani military officials said many militants had taken sanctuary after the military offensive against them in October 2009.

As Dawn suggests, a number of aspects of the reported air attack cannot be independently verified. Were they militants in actual fact? No civilains, innocent relatives, neighbors, friends etc who happened to be close by? If they were militants, were they al Qaeda, Taliban or elements opposed to Pakistan’s central rule in the tribal area?

It is essential in the current propaganda blitz to consciously ask ourselves these questions and try to find answers.
